11/24/09

DECEMBER 2009 IS THE STRONGEST MONTH EVER FOR CABLE'S MOVIES ON DEMAND (MOD), DELIVERING
BIGGEST BOX OFFICE TITLES OF THE YEAR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

New York, Nov. 23 - Cable television's Movies on Demand (MOD) platform gives viewers a holiday to remember in December, 2009. This coming month, first-run movies representing over one billion dollars in domestic box office - the biggest one month period ever - are available with the click of a remote. Among the films available on cable same day as their DVD release are "Terminator Salvation" "Julie and Julia," "(500) Days of Summer" and "9." The biggest hits on MOD in December are "Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince," "Up," "The Hangover," "Star Trek" and "Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian."

In December, most of the titles are offered at or near the same day as their home video DVD release ("Day & Date"), according to iN DEMAND, the industry's biggest distributor of movies to cable. Eight out of the 14 new movies are premiering on cable's MOD day & date with DVD release.

Accessing these films via MOD on cable is the ultimate in convenience and immediate gratification. They can be viewed at a moment's notice via cable remote, with full DVD functionality and availability in both Standard and High Definition. Given the incredibly busy holiday season, here's one area where families don't have to worry about pre-planning what movies they or their guests may be in the mood to watch. The party is just a click away.

Below are the titles listed in order of their premiere date on MOD. Titles premiering the same day as DVDs are noted D&D:

With its ease-of-use and broad availability, Video On Demand (VOD) in general is on a steep growth curve. According to Rentrak, in the first six months of 2009 alone there were more than 3.35 billion U.S. On Demand transactions* on cable and other platforms in the U.S., including free, subscription and transactional offerings. That compares to 3.8 billion VOD transactions in all of 2008 (Rentrak).

Leichtman Research Group projects that 44.8 million cable and telco video households will have access to Video On Demand at year-end 2009, up from 40.2 million at year-end 2008 (source: LRG's On-Demand TV 2009: A nationwide study of VOD and DVRs).

With Movies On Demand through digital cable, viewers can order, pause, forward and rewind. Most major theatrical movies on the MOD platform are also in HD. Viewers can find complete listings by going to www.indemand.com/movies, their on-screen guides or their cable system websites.
