iN DEMAND ANNOUNCES BREAKOUT PERFORMANCES
DURING SUMMER 2012 WITHIN TRANSACTIONAL CATEGORIES
Movies, Events and Sports Each Reveal Significant Wins
Orlando - Oct. 15 - iN DEMAND had a shining "Red Hot Summer" with several key events and categories reaching benchmark wins. Whether a result of stunting, celebrity promotion or compelling product, the transactional Pay-Per-View (PPV) and Video On Demand (VOD) categories had some big wins across movies, events and sports. Programs delivering increased buys and revenue for cable in the summer of 2012 included Comic-Con-themed title categories, "The Hunger Games" premiere on Movies on Demand (MOD), Steve Harvey's Grand Stand-Up Finale Pay-Per-View special, WWE SummerSlam and the Julio César Chávez Jr. vs. Sergio Martínez boxing event.
According to iN DEMAND's President & CEO Bob Benya, "Our ‘Red-Hot Summer' of 2012 proves that the transactional categories of PPV and VOD can deliver breakout performances across any category. The seeds of success are planted when we combine compelling product targeted to a passionate audience, enlist stars who will promote to their loyal audiences or we help MOD fans find special content through creative presentation and new "content folders" on the VOD menu."
Movies On Demand
"The Hunger Games" - A huge win for Movies On Demand came during the premiere weekend of "The Hunger Games" on August 18, 2012, Day & Date with its DVD release. iN DEMAND projects that the title will mark one of the best opening weekends ever for Movies On Demand in terms of buys and revenue.
Comic-Con - Timed with the big annual Comic-Con International 2012 pop-culture gathering in San Diego, Movies on Demand was populated with iconic comic book-themed library titles plus original content from the convention. The themed titles showed significant growth in usage, with buys increasing 29% over last year for non-Batman titles. But Batman library titles benefitted phenomenally from national promotion of the theatrical release of "The Dark Knight Rises." Year-over-year buys for Batman library titles increased nearly 340% over last year. iN DEMAND once again coordinated a promotional presence on behalf of national MOD at the convention and filmed many live interviews with genre stars for Free On Demand content which in turn promoted the category. (See full list of Comic Con themed library films on page 2.)
Steve Harvey's Grand Stand-Up Finale, which aired on both PPV and VOD starting on August 2, 2012, was the most successful non-ring sports event in the last five years and ranks as the most successful "concert-type" event in over 10 years. Mr. Harvey was fully committed to promoting this special via his website, in social media and PR, amongst his ardent fans. This visibility built excitement around the special, which was his retirement from 27 years of stand-up comedy, resulting in PPV buys 15 times higher than previous similar events.
Boxing: Chávez Jr. Vs. Martínez, September 15, 2012 from Las Vegas. This compelling and long-awaited match-up pitted the Mexican Julio César Chávez Jr. against the Argentinian Sergio Martínez. PPV buys for this event were 60% higher than projected, and, taking place over Mexican Independence Day weekend, it also over-indexed in Hispanic markets. Also, the event competed with a live Showtime Pay TV title, boxing match in Las Vegas on the same night, underscoring renewed vibrancy in the PPV boxing category.
This year's WWE SummerSlam, the event headlined by the former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesner on August 19, delivered 30% more buys year over year.
*Comic-Con-themed movie collection included the following titles:
"The Dark Knight"
"Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance"
"Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope"
"Iron Man II"
"The Incredible Hulk"
"Men In Black"
"Star Trek" (2009)
"V for Vendetta"
