Strong entries in the action and kids genres anchor the new releases making their television premieres via Movies on Demand (MOD) on cable’s VOD platform in July.  From the majors, kids can celebrate their summer off with two recent animated hits On Demand, The Boss Baby and Smurfs: The Lost Village.  And summer excitement starts with two huge action hits: The Fate of the Furious and Kong: Skull Island. Also, see below for a wealth of new releases from the indie studios.

Movies On Demand makes available two versions of The Fate of the Furious movie, the original theatrical version and an extended director’s cut. In The Fate of the Furious, a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) seduces Dom (Vin Diesel) into a betrayal of those closest to him, forcing the team into an adrenaline-filled adventure. Kong: Skull Island is the latest King Kong reboot, this time set in the 1970s with a team of scientists and Vietnam War soldiers who embark on an expedition to an uncharted Pacific island, home to a giant gorilla and other supersized creatures. This star-studded (Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman and more) explosive war between monster and man is powered by a driving score with classic Vietnam era and 1970s rock hits. Note Brie Larson is also featured in an indie release this month, Free Fire. See below for more info.

A big recent animated hit, The Boss Baby, is voiced by Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow and narrated by Tobey Maguire. Seven-year-old Tim discovers his new brother is a suit-wearing executive and reluctantly agrees to team up with the Boss Baby on a secret mission. In Smurfs: The Lost Village, these fully animated Smurfs must race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village. MOD is also showing Smurfs: The Lost Village with Bonus Featurette.

Indie premieres on MOD for July 2017*

On the indie front, viewers will find a mix of film festival winners, stars in unusual outings, kids’ titles and a variety of intriguing stories.

Coming to MOD before DVD release is the kids’ title based on a classic novel, Swallows & Amazons, which got 93% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and several film festival wins.  Starring Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting, Boardwalk Empire, voice of the Princess in Pixar’s Brave), four children (The Swallows) go on a sailing adventure to an island where they encounter a rival group of kids (The Amazons). They soon become allies when pirates threaten all they hold dear.

Garnering 92% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and several Spirit Awards, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern lead a remarkable ensemble cast in Certain Women, a portrait of three powerful and flawed women forging their own paths.  Winner of multiple film festival awards, A Quiet Passion stars Cynthia Nixon as 19th Century American poet Emily Dickinson. Nixon personifies the wit, intellectual independence, and pathos of the great writer in this masterful biographical drama from acclaimed director Terence Davies.

In Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, Richard Gere gives a subtle, sensitive performance as Norman Oppenheimer, a small time operator who befriends a young politician at a low point in his life. When the politician becomes an influential world leader, Norman’s life dramatically changes both for better and worse.  The Martin Scorcese-Executive Produced Free Fire was a Toronto Film Festival winner, starring Brie Larson and Armie Hammer. Set in 1970s Boston, a black market arms deal goes outrageously wrong, the story becomes both a parody and critique of out-of-control gun violence.
