Movies On Demand on Cable Update – January 2016

January ushers in the New Year with a great bounty of movie hits and award-winning indies making their television premieres via Movies on Demand (MOD) on cable.

Based on a best-selling book, The Martian, and directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator), Matt Damon’s character is stranded alone on the Red Planet after his crew presumes him dead and abandons him after a brutal storm. Injected with both humor and fierce resolve, the film achieved both critical and audience raves and also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena and Jeff Daniels.

Also highly praised by critics for its honest portrayals and a big box office draw, Straight Outta Compton follows the cultural phenomenon of rap music’s emergence and the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of the Compton, California hip hop band N.W.A. during the 1980s. Band members Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and the widow of Eazy-E produced the film, assuring an authenticity that cements their legacies.

Hit family films:

Hotel Transylvania 2 features the continuing antics of Dracula and his family in this sequel to the 2012 hit. It is voiced by Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi and David Spade with a cameo appearance of Mel Brooks as Vlad, Count Dracula’s father. Goosebumps, based on the worldwide best-selling books, is both spooky and completely zany when real monsters of all kinds escape from an author’s (Jack Black) books and terrorize his small town.

Scaling the heights:

Two of our January titles, both based on true stories, are not for acrophobics! The charming Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as the laser-focused Philippe Petit, the French tightrope-walker who was obsessed with walking between the unfinished NYC World Trade Center towers from the moment he read about them. It is as much a love letter to 1970s NYC and the optimism of the time as it is to Petit’s tenacity, shrewd planning and luck to achieve his crazy goal. And Everest follows the heartbreaking stories of several ill-fated expeditions up Mount Everest in 1996, with Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and many other stars.

Finally, a retired executive realizes retirement isn’t for him, landing an internship at a fashion website run by a young, career-driven woman in The Intern, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway.
