Movies On Demand on Cable Update – February 2016

No mid-winter blues with Movies On Demand! February warms us up with a rich array of award-winning and critical hits making their television premieres via Movies on Demand (MOD) on cable.

A huge hit in theaters, Daniel Craig returns as 007 in Spectre, manifesting his dapper, sexy, confident, globe-trotting splendor, and using all manner of shrewdness, gadgets and charm to outwit a sinister organization in the latest James Bond franchise film. From Pixar studios comes The Good Dinosaur, an energizing animated “what if the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs on earth missed us” tale, with a feel-good friendship story of an adorable dino and an even cuter boy who strike up an unlikely alliance.

Based on the true story of 1970s Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, Johnny Depp has won critical praise for his riveting and “chilling” lead performance in Black Mass. In the Steven Spielberg thriller, Bridge of Spies, Tom Hanks plays an insurance lawyer enlisted to negotiate a spy swap during the Cold War. The film, also starring Mark Rylance, Domenick Lombardozzi and Alan Alda, received 91% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Steve Jobs is the dramatized story of the revolutionary yet inscrutable tech icon Jobs, during the time of his earliest innovations. The film won two Golden Globes, one for screenplay writer Aaron Sorkin, and Best Supporting Actress for Kate Winslet as Jobs’ right-hand woman. Spotlight, one of the most talked about films of the recent season, is about the Boston Globe’s special projects team that took on the delicate journalistic task of uncovering the abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. The film features a stellar cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber and Rachel McAdams. It received critical raves, numerous award nominations and 96% positive Rotten Tomatoes Reviews.

In Room, the Golden Globe winner for Best Actress, Brie Larson, plays a mother who navigates bringing up her five year-old son amidst the sobering world of a room they are held captive in; and the terrifying and amazing outside world once they get their freedom. Gorgeously filmed in the Swiss Alps, Youth stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as an accomplished composer and a filmmaker who meet for a vacation, with Jane Fonda and Rachel Weisz. In Truth, Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett star in the story of the 60 Minutes report that ended the anchorman career of Dan Rather.
