Movies On Demand on Cable Update – December 2015

The festive season is upon us, brimming with family gatherings and shared entertainment. Movies on Demand (MOD) on cable serves up some great family titles making their television premieres in December 2015.

Family fun flourishes this holiday season:

The lovable Minions take center stage in a Despicable Me spinoff, which traces their history on earth from one-celled yellow organisms and their search for a villain to serve, voiced by Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Carell. In Marvel’s Ant-Man, the fun and inventive film turns the super-hero genre on its head, with Paul Rudd as the mini-mini-hero, plus Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll and Bobby Cannavale. Pan is a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s seminal Peter Pan story. In the fantastical adventure film, Hugh Jackman plays the ruthless pirate Blackbeard who steals Peter away to the magical Neverland. Levi Miller plays Peter, Rooney Mara is Tiger Lily and Amanda Seyfried is Peter’s mother.

Action also heats up the December roster:

Receiving excellent reviews (92% positive on Rotten Tomatoes), Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and its death-defying star Tom Cruise maintains the franchises’ dramatic stunts, nail-biting thrills and exhilarating pace. In the latest installment of the epic sci-fi saga, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, the Glades find themselves in a stark, dystopian apocalyptic landscape, fighting fearsome obstacles.

Defies categorization:

The irrepressible Seth MacFarlane writes and directs Ted 2 (Unrated) starring Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried and a stuffed bear named Ted, who proves in a court of law that he is human. You can’t make this stuff up. Well, Seth MacFarlane can.

Early looks:

MOD viewers get an early chance to see two fun films from Paramount during their unprecedented early release on cable soon after theatrical airings. In the outrageous horror/comedy, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, three scouts join forces with one badass cocktail waitress to become the world’s most unlikely team of heroes fighting to save mankind from a zombie invasion. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, airing in 3D, is the final film in the famed found-footage supernatural horror series, with little Leila communing with ghosts in the family home.

Indie premieres on MOD for December 2015* (just a selection):

As the 2016 Awards Season starts to simmer, a great variety of indies come to MOD in December, including many premiering the same day as their theatrical release.

Festival buzz:

2016 Awards Season buzz is heating up for several documentaries premiering in December. Amy, the life story of ill-fated British music star Amy Winehouse, whose meteoric rise to fame and huge worldwide popularity was derailed in a downward spiral of addiction and self-destruction, amid the pressures of fame. Another notable doc in December is He Named Me Malala, from Oscar-winning director Davis Guggenheim. It is the story of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenage girl who was targeted and shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out in favor of girls’ education. Miraculously surviving her critical injury, she lived to become a world-wide activist and the youngest ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

Also, getting awards buzz is Dixieland, set in a rural Mississippi trailer park, starring Chris Zylka (The Leftovers) playing an ex-con who falls for his stripper neighbor, played by Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough. Faith Hill receives great notices as his mother, playing against type, and Breaking Bad’s RJ Mitte is the con’s good buddy. Pawn Sacrifice is also getting awards attention as Tobey Maguire (Spiderman), slips out of his bodysuit for a much more introspective role as the international chess Grandmaster champion Bobby Fischer, challenging the Russian players in 1972 during the height of the Cold War.

Other indies to notice:

In Life, Robert Pattinson (Twilight) plays a Life Magazine photographer who forms a friendship with the emerging actor James Dean, played by Dane DeHaan (Lincoln). Huevos: Little Rooster’s Egg-cellent Adventure is an animated family feature about a teenage rooster who hatches a plan to save his family’s farm.
