Movies On Demand on Cable Schedule – October 2017
Big action franchises lead the October 2017 Movies on Demand premieres. See below for the exciting slate of major studio and indie new releases making their television premieres via Movies on Demand (MOD) on cable’s VOD platform.
The world has seen Spider-Man in many forms, but Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first in the Marvel series, starring Tom Holland, who begins to navigate his new identity as the web-slinging super hero under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark. In Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back and being pursued by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his ghoulish crew who escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…notably Jack.
Garnering 93% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, War for the Planet of the Apes is the last in the rebooted trilogy, starring Andy Serkis as the leader of the apes, who are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). Called breathtaking and powerful, the characters on both sides are so well crafted that it is hard to decide who to root for. Good things come in threes and Annabelle: Creation is also the third in a series, which is also a spinoff of the Conjuring franchise.
Baby Driver also clocked in with 93% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Kevin Spacey plays a crime mastermind and Ansel Elgort is his reluctant young getaway driver, who uses his personal rock and pop soundtrack to fuel a doomed heist that threatens his life, love & freedom. In Girls Trip, a strong cast (Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah) drives this wild and outrageously raunchy comedy about four college friends who reunite at the Essence Festival in New Orleans to test and cement their sisterhood.

October indie premieres on MOD*
A wide range of imaginative and award-winning indie films fill out the MOD premiere slate for October.
Writer/director Sofia Coppola won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, the story of a wounded Civil War solider taken in at a girls’ boarding school. This is a reimagining of the 1971 Clint Eastwood movie, this time from the women’s perspective, starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. Bringing in 92% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a Sundance Festival nomination, is the melancholy and moving A Ghost Story, starring Casey Affleck as a deceased husband who comes back as a ghost to console his bereft wife Rooney Mara.
Florence Pugh gives a tour de force performance where lust, power and murder collide in the psychological tragedy, Lady Macbeth, the critically-acclaimed winner of 12 film festival awards. Also coming in with multiple film festival wins is Maudie, based on the true story of arthritic Nova Scotia folk artist Maud (Sally Hawkins) and the unlikely romance between her and a hardened reclusive bachelor (Ethan Hawke).
Menashe, with 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes is a glimpse into a notoriously secret ultra-orthodox Hasidic community, when a loving young widower father fights against tradition in order to keep custody of his only son. In Churchill, Brian Cox (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), plays British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the tense days leading up to the infamous Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, France in June, 1944.
Two Notable Documentaries:
Step chronicles the senior year in a girls’ high school step dance team and their passion and drive to win a championship and secure their futures in college. This powerful film embodies the true meaning of sisterhood, set against the backdrop of Baltimore’s inner city. Finally, an Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is the riveting climate change follow-up to Vice President Al Gore’s AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution.
