MOD Premieres – Highlights of the Month:

Denzel Washington, nominated for his performance in Roman J. Israel, Esq., plays an idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when the activism that has defined his career is challenged. Colin Farrell also stars in this dramatic thriller. Coco, a family-friendly animated film, is about Miguel, who journeys to the magical land of his ancestors, the Land of the Dead. Anthony Gonzalez and Gael Garcia Bernal lead a stellar cast in this award winning movie.

Award-winning actress Frances McDormand delivers a powerful performance in the comedy-drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, hailed as one of the year’s best films. Fellow award nominees Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell also star. Another drama with comedic life twists is Lady Bird, with an award winning performance by Saoirse Ronan. Lady Bird (Ronan) is a seventeen year-old who must navigate a loving but turbulent relationship with her strong-willed mother (Laurie Metcalf) over the course of her senior year of high school.

The moms and dads of comedy are back – with their parents. Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell reunite in A Bad Moms Christmas to rebel against the challenges and expectations of a perfect Christmas as well as against their own mothers. Brad (Will Ferrell) and Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) are joined by their dads in Daddy’s Home 2. The dads finally have co-parenting figured out, but when their fathers come to town they throw the family into complete chaos just in time for the holidays.

MOD Indie Premieres – Highlights
of the Month:

One of the most anticipated indie premieres in February is Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Kristin Scott Thomas as his wife, Clementine.  This multiple award winner follows the early days of World War II, when Churchill had to decide whether to negotiate with Hitler or fight on against incredible odds.

Another award winner is The Florida Project, a film about 6-year-old Moonee, Brooklynn Prince, her 2 best friends, their families and motel life in the shadow of Disney World. Willem Dafoe, the kindly motel manager, stars in this endearing film about living life to the fullest, while growing up amid struggles and harsh realities.

February also brings us multiple action packed dramas and thrillers like Beast of Burden, a thriller about airplane pilot Sean Haggerty’s (Daniel Radcliffe) final run as a drug smuggler across the US-Mexico border. Jason Momoa stars in, Braven, an action-thriller about a logger fighting for survival against drug traffickers who have stashed heroin in his hunting cabin.

On a lighter note, Basmati Blues, starring Brie Larson and Donald Sutherland, is about a well-intentioned scientist (Larson) who is sent to India to sell genetically modified rice. While there she gets caught up in a scheme to cheat local farmers and falls in love with the one farmer who can save them all. The Female Brain examines what makes a woman swipe right for Mr. Wrong. Sofia Vergara and Whitney Cummings star in this fresh, clever look at the science behind modern-day romantic adventures.
