12/20/13

Movies On Demand on Cable Schedule Update – January 2014

Movies On Demand (MOD) launches into 2014 with a top-notch selection of films in every genre, from big hits to buzz-worthy indie gems getting their premieres on MOD.

Already nominated for a Golden Globe award is Tom Hanks’ stellar performance in Captain Phillips, the true story based on the 2009 Somali container ship hijacking. Another movie based on true events is the hit Fruitvale Station, multiple winner at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, based on a tragic incident in San Francisco’s transit system five years ago. Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey star in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, which tells the powerful story of the civil rights movement starting in the late 1950s from the perspective of a White House butler, Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) who served eight presidents. In Woody Allen’s new film, “Blue Jasmine,” (91% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes), Cate Blanchett is getting rave reviews as a wealthy socialite who loses everything.

Also, widely praised is the bittersweet love story, Enough Said, starring James Gandolfini in his final role, opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus.  And kids can feast on the hit sequel film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, following the continuing adventures of inventor Flint Lockwood.

Most of the major releases below premiere on MOD the same day as DVD release and are offered in both standard and high-definition**, as are many indies. The industry’s website, www.rentmoviesondemand.com is an at-a-glance look at most premiere titles along with synopses, trailers and Rotten Tomatoes® scores. In addition to new premieres, a wealth of library titles is always playing on MOD.  Like us on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/moviesondemand.

January 2014 Independent Studio & Other Titles of Note** (just a selection)

Two indie documentaries premiering on MOD in January are already getting Awards Season buzz, notably, 20 Feet From Stardom, the story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest pop music legends.  Even though the film features Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting, they are just supporting actors to the real stars of this film, which got 99% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  The Act of Killing, (96% critics’ approval on Rotten Tomatoes) is an audacious documentary in which leaders of Indonesian death squads reenact their mass murders.

MOD viewers will also get the first look at several films premiering before their theatrical release. Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey stars along with Dominic Cooper and Emily Browning in Summer in February, about a love triangle amongst British bohemian artists in the days before WWI.  MOD audiences can also get a sneak peak of Grand Piano, an absurd thriller featuring Elijah Wood as a concert pianist fiercely playing to save both his career and his life.

Other indie titles which have gotten positive notices include: Short Term 12, an acclaimed film (98% positive on Rotten Tomatoes) about a young woman (Brie Larson) working with at-risk teens, and all the complex issues it brings up for her. The Spectacular Now, a coming of age story written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber [(500) Days of Summer] got near universal critical raves. In a World… is a clever romantic comedy about a struggling voiceover talent with Lake Bell (Children’s Hospital) and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine).
